What the Mountain Brook Students Really Have Said
Scrux.com has an excellent compilation of all the student quotes relating to Natalee's disapearance. In looking at the "leaving Carlos and Charlies" issue, I saw quite a few interesting comments. After pondering them, I have a few questions. Please let me know what, if anything, sheds any other light on this: When did Natalee first meet Joran? How well did Natalee know Joran before the night of May 29/early morning of May 30? Who saw Natalee get into Deepak's car? Who saw Joran in the car at that time? Why were some so quick to know "something was wrong" on the morning of May 30, when others thought it wasn't particularly unusual? I am sure the strange statements and contradictions will give rise to even more questions. Here are the quotes. More at www.scrux.com I. Mountain Brook Students and/or Natalee Meeting Joran. Holloway's stepfather, George "Jug" Twitty, told the AP that Holloway met the Dutch student in the casino of her hotel and flirted with him two days before she disappeared. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,159128,00.html (From Alana Jordan) (Alana, talking about Natalee and Joran) She met him in our hotel’s casino a few days before that night… she knew him for a while (From Alana Jordan): He was playing in the casino in our hotel a few nights before. I guess Natalee liked him well enough to hang out with him over the next few daysUnidentified male (student?): When we were watching roulette, Natalee and her friends came, and I -- while I was there, I saw that she came and asked if -- what Joran was going to do tonight, to make sure that he went to Carlos 'n Charlie's that night. The source is a CNN transcript where this "male" appeared in a video segment. He was not identified as student only a male Ruth McVay: (responding to questions whether Natalee made an arrangement with Joran to go to Carlos 'n Charlies) Not with him. Absolutely not. With us. She went with all of our friends. He wasn't with us. He didn't go with us. He (Joran) came with his friends. He had told us that night that Sunday was not a fun night on the island and that no one goes out. So we found it ironic that he showed up. Ruth McVay: We were in our hotel casino. And that was the first night that she (Natalee) had ever met him. Contrary to other stories that are circulating, she did not know him before that night. . Ruth McVay: Nat met him (Joran) in the hotel casino called Excelsior. She talked to him for a matter of five minutes when we were playing blackjack. The group of girls with (Natalee) told (Joran) they would be at Carlos 'N Charlie's the following night. source Interviewer: Did he he seem sort of like for lack of a better... a sort of a guy trying to pick up women? Ruth McVey: Not at all. Interviewer: So like a ... just like a gambler? Ruth McVey: He was just there to play and be friendly, and that's it. Interviewer: Did he show any interest... particular interest in Natalee as you're sitting at the table? Ruth McVey: Not at all Ruth McVey: (to question, where was Joran sitting at the casino) At the same table, I was sitting next to him. Interviewer: What did you think of him? Ruth McVey: The normal teenaged boy. Interviewer: Nothing at all. Ruth McVey: Nothing. Interviewer: Nothing in particular? Ruth McVey: Nothing at all. Trey Merrill and Beau Barron: (quoted in newspaper) ...(We) encountered van der Sloot while playing cards at their hotel casino. Bryan Reynolds: There was almost a fight between my friend and him (Joran). I had to break them up. That's when I got a good look at them. Bryan Reynolds: (quoted in newspaper as saying) ... (I) saw (Joran and the Kalpoe brothers) hanging out at the Holiday Inn Bryan Reynolds: (quoted as saying) Van der Sloot got into a scuffle with some of the Mountain Brook guys at the bar Bryan Reynolds: I broke it up. It was outside the Carlos 'n Charlies, the second night we were there. Jamie Justice: (quoted on cable news show as saying) ....(I) got to know van der Sloot at the Black Jack table. Jamie Justice: The way he came off wasn't at all in a threatening way, he was really naive to everybody. Jamie Justice: He didn't look like one of the locals and he didn't act like one of the locals. He acted more like he was just down there vacationing Alana Jordan: (answering if she had seen Natalee with Joran before the last night) No, but he was in our casino a lot. Ed Kissel: (did he know Joran, how did he know who he was) I didn't know him, but I had seen -- he had been around the hotel and the casino with her (Natalee) and with her friends, her closer friends, just hanging out around the hotel for the last few days, two or three days II. At Carlos and Charlies Virginia Page: I remember dancing with her for most of the time, and then an hour before (Carlos ‘N’ Charlies) closed, I didn’t see her again. She hadn’t planned on meeting (Van der Sloot), he just happened to be there Ed Kissel: (when was the last time he saw Natalee) I think I saw her a little later that night. I had stayed in Carlos 'n Charlie's pretty long, and I saw her dancing with Van Der Sloot later that night Ed Kissel: (was he concerned) No. I wasn't personally concerned about anything. From what I've heard, I heard people talk about him and he sounded like a nice guy. So I didn't think any big deal. I personally had ridden in the car over there. I made friends with one of the waiters. I'm fluent in Spanish, and you know, I was friends with somebody. And so I was thinking, you know, I rode in a car with somebody, she rides in the car with somebody, no big deal. I didn't think about it. Ruth McVay: (quoted in interview) The last night of the vacation Natalee went to a Boyz II Men and Lauryn Hill concert on Surfside Beach. Ruth McVay: (reported as saying in interview) (Joran) showed up around midnight. (I) left soon after. I was tired. Claire Fierman: (to, when was the last time that you saw Natalee) I was with Natalee during the day, but I think we‘d rather keep this focused, if it‘s OK with you, on all the support that we are getting in Mountain Brook in Birmingham. Katherine Weatherly: (Did she see Joran van der Sloot at CnC's?) Actually...I was with Natalee. We were all together, dancing, and Natalee was only with Joran towards the end of the night. But, I did pass him. I didn`t really even notice him. And that was it. Katherine Weatherly: (referring to Joran) I didn`t see him later in the night with Natalee. I saw him in passing, and that was it III. Leaving Carlos and Charlies . (From Alana Jordan) (Responding to the question, "What time did you leave the club?") It closed at about 1, 1:30 and we left around then. A couple of my friends and I went to another club for a minute to make suer that no one went there and were being left behind. When we all went to the hotel, we sat outside at the pool for the rest of the night until REALLY late. (From Alana Jordan) I didn’t see her get into the car… I talked to her when we all left the club and asked if she was ok, and she said yeah. I thought she was going to leave with another group of Mtn. Brook kids that were a few feet in front of us, b/c me and a couple others went to check another club to make sure no one got left. I guess she got in the car somewhere between walking with me and going up to the other group. (From Alana Jordan) (To the question, "Was it a grey honda?") I don’t really know…. It might have been, but I didn’t see it. Granted, I was exactly on the look out for it either. (From Alana Jordan) I never saw her get into the car, so I couldn’t say. I just talked to her apparently right before she got in the car… I thought she was going to get in the taxi with other MB kids. Alana Jordan: (daughter of Mountain Brook internet poster, arbeej, as quoted by mother). She (daughter) was leaving the bar with two friends, and they were right behind another group. She (daughter) called to Natalee and asked if she "wanted to walk with them." Natalee cheerfully said "No," she "would catch up to the group right ahead and walk with them." Ruth McVay: (to question if she saw Natalee leave with Joran) No, I actually left an hour before the club closed. Alana Jordan: (to question where, what time and in what condition last saw Natalee) The last time I saw Natalee, we were leaving the club, and a friend of mine went back to the club because we were going to make sure that no one got left because we were leaving at closing. And we ran into her and asked her if she was Ok. And she said, "Yes" and indicated that she was going back to the hotel with some other Mountain Brook students. Alana Jordan: (did she know Joran) I never met him before, and that night he didn't talk. He was just walking next to her. But I assumed that it was him. It was a tall guy with dark hair. I never knew his name, though. Alana Jordan: (responding to question about Natalee outside the club) Well, we just assumed that she was going with... there was two groups of students, and we assumed that she was going with a group that was in front of us. And we turned the corner to go to another club, me and a couple of my friends, to make sure that no one got left in that club, because we weren't sure if anyone had gone there. Make sure that no one got left there Katherine Weatherly: (Did Katherine see Natalee when she left CnCs?) No, I did not see her. Everything else is very vague as to who said it: Unknown students : (daughter quotes other students as saying) Natalie passed them on the road a short while later. She was a passenger in a taxi with another person. She clearly did not know she was in danger; she leaned out the window and shouted something like "Aruba! Woohoo!" source Unknown students : (daughter quotes other students as saying) None of those who passed Natalee had the impression that Natalee was falling-down-drunk or anything like that. source Unknown student : (this is a quote of the mother, arbeej, quoting her daughter and quoting another student) Afterward, outside, my daughter talks to her and Joran is beside her. Although she's described as having unusually heavy eyelids, she does not seem otherwise impaired. She's calm, quiet; does not introduce or acknowledge Joran. Some brief time later, another student sees her back at C&C's, emerging with Deepak, who's supporting and guiding her by the elbow. She looks a bit out of it (he thought intoxicated) and as if she might be unable to walk without that support from Deepak. Unknown students: (from David Kock, Satish's attorney, referring to court documents, quoting students, some distance away from Carlos 'n Charlies, speaking to Natalee) Why doesn't she get out of the car. She said, "no," that she was going to drive around. Ruth McVay: (quoted in interview as saying) Other friends told (me) the story of how (Natalee) got in the car with strangers. The friends watched as (Natalee) drove away with three guys the friends had met the day before This is an early post from Rhonda Jordan, the mother of Alana Jordan. Alana was in Aruba with Natalee. Rhonda usually posts as "Arbeej" and sometimes as "Arlee." My daughter was one of the last to see Natalee before she got in a car with a young man she'd befriended. He and his friends offered her a ride back to the resort from the bar they had all been visiting. Natalee had been getting along famously with the fellow, who told her he was a Dutch tourist. She was never seen after she got in his car. The police were able to easily identify the guy off surveillance tape because he was actually NOT any tourist but actually a local drug dealer My daughter was in the same bar at the same time near the same people. This is Beth's reference on an Aruban radio or tv broadcast to statements allegedly made by unnamed fellow students : BETH HOLLOWAY TWITTY, MOTHER: She was seen leaving Carlos and Charlie (ph) at approximately 1:30 a.m. Monday morning, and her -- she was here on a senior trip. And there were approximately -- I don't know, they could have been 20 to 40 of her classmates in Carlos and Charlie's (ph) periodically, but at least 10 of them saw her leave in a small four-door car. Not sure of the make, bluish-gray color, and there were three locals in the car with her. IV. The Next Morning; May 30 Frances Ellen Byrd: I figured out something was wrong when my friends came to knock on my door in the morning asking where she was, because Natalee was the first one up. She is the most responsible out of all of my friends. And we all—Natalee is the leader of our friends. And when she wasn‘t there, we went straight—straight to the chaperons because something—we knew something was wrong Claire Fierman: (When did Claire realize Natalee was not there the next day?) The next morning, I was on an earlier flight than everybody else, and Francis Ellen, one of our friends, came and found me and Katherine in the airport and told us that Natalee wasn`t flying home, that they did not know where she was. Katherine Weatherly:(When did Katherine realize Natalee was not there the next day?) I realized the same time as Claire, actually, but, at the time, we thought maybe she slept in. We didn`t... I mean, we were very concerned, but we thought she would be coming home. We... well, we had to get on the plane immediately after that, and we got on the plane... Katherine Weatherly:(Did Katherine try to call Natalee before she got on the plane?) No. We knew that she didn`t have her cell phone with her, so there was no point in calling, If she... because... well, they... I wasn`t there when they realized that she was missing. I was told in the airport. But, I know that other people did, and... but realized that she didn`t have her phone with her Katherine Weatherly: (Why would anybody know Natalee didn`t have her phone with her?) Because they saw her phone in the hotel room. She hadn`t taken it out with her that the night Katherine Weatherly:(Did other people try to call Natalee on her cell phone?) No. Well, no. They... no. They didn`t. Everyone knew, when the next morning that her cell phone was there. I was just saying that we would have tried to call her. I don`t know if people actually did try and call her or not, but the people that were in her room knew that she hadn`t had her phone that night (From Alana Jordan) We actually thought she was fine and had just overslept or something when our group got on the plane, it wasn't until the second group had their flight that we really started to worry (From Alana Jordan): Nat had two roommates…. I don’t think anyone thought she was “missing” they just thought she was with someone else… there were a lot of us scattered all over the hotel. We knew something was up though when she wasnt in her room for checks the next morning, we just didnt know how severe. (From Alana Jordan) The chaperones knew she wasnt there at 8am:, that's when they cam:e by and checked on all of us and woke us up. We didn't really think anything of it though... We didn't realize that it was an issue until after we got home, or almost home anyway. (From Alana Jordan): Yeah, I was in the first group, and Nat was supposed to be in the second, so ours was less dramatic… We honestly just thought that she had overslept or something, and didn’t really think it was a big deal. We were actually talkin about how one of the chaperones who had lost a lot of sleep over us would probably be pissed b/c he would have to pay $75 to get a new ticket… we thought they would come back home a few hours later. When we landed in Atlanta though, the bus-ride was a little more hectic… We watched Dodgeball, though, and for the most part thought Nat was fine… but then near the end we started to get more worried. The next day we were all stressed because they still hadn’t found her and we feared something like this, but didn’t really believe it. It’s just gotten worse since then. (From Alana Jordan) No, we just thought she might have overslept... We didn't think she was that little punk at all! She's not usually late, but we thought she must have just crashed somewhere, if not in her room, then in one of her other friend's rooms. (From Alana Jordan) Yeah, I think a lot of people were given the wrong impression. I think they just told us kids later, because they didn't want us to freak out and worry. The chaperones did a really good job. I was actually "missing" the day before and everyone just about had a heart attack, but then I was ok... I think they thought the sam:e for Nat and just didnt want to worry anyone Francis Ellen Byrd: We immediately knew something was wrong, because she was the first one to wake up. And when her roommates knocked on my door and said that they didn't know where she was, we went straight to the chaperones and they immediately started working on it. Ruth McVay: (about the morning of the flight home) We thought she slept in another room so as not to wake us up. We thought she was being polite. We started walking down the halls knocking on all the doors. We told the chaperone, 'There's a problem, she's not here." Could there have been a case of mistaken identity? It's certainly possible. Here's what Arbeej, the mother of Alana Jordan (Alana was on the trip) said on tripadvisor: She was puzzled when she heard that Natalee had been sick in the bathroom, because she herself did not *see* or even hear about *anyone* being sick in the bathroom, even though the club isn't all that big. A tourist couple says it was Natalee being sick and her friends were helping her. It turns out that someone matching Nat's description on the trip (80% of them match Nat's description!) had indeed been sick. We in the community now know who the girl was because she and her friends confirmed this up at the church. It wasn't Natalee, even though the tourists *believed* that's who they saw (= eyewitness report). But it *did* happen -- at least as far as a MB girl being sick -- even though some of the girls at the club did not at first believe it (= eyewitness report). Lots of inconsistencies there -- but none deliberate or technically false... except the i.d., which was an understandable mistake. Very curious! Any comments?

Near the bottom of the post... Alana said she was thought to be "missing"... (From Alana Jordan) Yeah, I think a lot of people were given the wrong impression. I think they just told us kids later, because they didn't want us to freak out and worry. The chaperones did a really good job. I was actually "missing" the day before and everyone just about had a heart attack, but then I was ok... I think they thought the sam:e for Nat and just didnt want to worry anyone So, wonder where she was?

We told the chaperone, 'There's a problem, she's not here." Very curious! Any comments?

Ruth McVay: (quoted in interview as saying) Other friends told (me) the story of how (Natalee) got in the car with strangers. The friends watched as (Natalee) drove away with three guys the friends had met the day before I have yet to hear about the Kalpoe brothers meeting any of the students prior to them going to CnCs. So who were the 3 guys the friends met the day before?

Frances Ellen Byrd; Because Natalee was the first one up??I posted this at rwv weeks ago.. Was Nat the first one up the day they were leaving? Then no one could find her?? This just seems weird.. Back to lurking Keep up the good work

Holmes: Thanks for the trouble you took. The first thing I notice, is the skimpy amount after seven months. And the comment by Alana, about being missing herself and how everyone was worried. And the constant downplaying of every single little thing. I didn't, she didn't, we didn't. However, their "immediate" response when they knew she was missing. They did everything just right. :( I am trying to be kind.

Holmes- 12-29-2005

MTB kids cannot say nothing they was wasted . So, Gabrielle, you know they were all wasted? No teatotalers? No "designated driver" types who for religious or health reasons weren' t drinking? And if so, does that mean we shouldn't listen to anything they ever say? That they weren't really drinking responsibly? Or is it just that you find these particular quotes inconvenient so you say (without proof) that everyone quoted was wasted? Well, that would really put things up in the air, since not a single named person can place Natalee with J2K anyway, and even if we got the names of the "sources", they were "wasted." Not much to build a case on? Maybe ALE should just declare the case closed, as unresolved, becuase all the witnesses are Mountain Brook kids who Gabrielle says were wasted. As to the next morning, though, when many (in contrast to Beth and a couple of Natalee's friends who may have had inklings of a runaway plan and a blue eyed Dutch boy) thought Natalees being "out" was not a cause for concern, were they all still smashed? Were some of them sober? Is Alana making things up when she says she "went missing" herself and it was no big deal?

Highrise- 12-29-2005

well to me it doesnt sound like some of them were really drinking responsibly,or using the buddy system either, and alot of room changing, something to me just does not add up in good ole MB

Holmes, I have avoided confrontation with you since our last difference of opinion. You have no opinions because you feel that you are always, unequivocally correct in your assumptions. It's your way or the highway. I have watched you cut down other posters over the past few days..and kept quiet. It would be better if you just ignored me. We will NEVER agree....so, as I've asked previously, let's just agree to disagree. OK :D

Ruth McVay said she went back to the room early and went to sleep...also said that she woke up at 4:00 a.m. and noticed Natalee was not in the bed next to her as she had been on previous nights. Has this been verified via hotel video or hotel employee account? All parts of that statement.Excellent question. Isn't she the one that was flirting with Joran?

CSI- 12-29-2005

Near the bottom of the post... Alana said she was thought to be "missing"... (From Alana Jordan) Yeah, I think a lot of people were given the wrong impression. I think they just told us kids later, because they didn't want us to freak out and worry. The chaperones did a really good job. I was actually "missing" the day before and everyone just about had a heart attack, but then I was ok... I think they thought the sam:e for Nat and just didnt want to worry anyone So, wonder where she was? So why the phone calls to Beth and the immediate kidnapping story? That confirms the LE's stories that a lot young tourists go "missing" and show up again. That is why the 48 hr rule is in Aruba and other places.

WordsofWisdom- 12-29-2005

How could Natalee "always be the first one up", yet managed to miss 2 breakfasts?

WordsofWisdom- 12-29-2005

And one more thing...doesn't anyone else find it strange that Ruth left an hour earlier than ALL others, all by herself, to go back to sleep- on the last night on the island, around the same time JK2 were arriving at C&C's?
